NEW! March 25, 2009 - Furlough Statement by Governor
Recently, the State of NJ initiated furloughs in an attempt to curtail the state’s fiscal problems. On March 25, Governor Corzine and the Civil Service Commission set rules for mandatory furloughs. By declaring an “emergency,” the state is requiring that the furlough be adopted immediately. Part of this effort is an exemption for certain personnel who require round-the-clock coverage, such as law enforcement. The technicality exists because of the phrase “round-the-clock coverage,” which provided justification for initiating a furlough schedule for our department. The State PBA’s position is that ALL law enforcement should be exempt from furlough. Therefore, on Monday, March 30, in Mercer County, the State PBA will file a lawsuit against the State of NJ to make ALL law enforcement exempt from furlough. See
